Use of X (formerly Twitter)

As a charity, The Exmoor pony Society is committed to communicating responsibly, transparently and in ways that best serve our members, supporters and partners.

We recognise that there are legitimate and growing concerns about the conduct, governance and content moderation practices of X (formerly Twitter). Recent incidents, including well-publicised issues relating to inappropriate or harmful content, underline the need for vigilance and careful judgement when using any social media platform.

At present, we intend to continue using X as one of several communication channels. This decision is based on its ongoing reach, accessibility and relevance to key audiences, including stakeholders, policymakers, partner organisations and the media. Notably, a wide range of responsible organisations – including UK government departments, public bodies, charities and health organisations – continue to use the platform for public information and engagement.

Our continued presence on X does not imply endorsement of the platform, its ownership or content shared on it. Rather, it reflects a pragmatic approach to meeting audiences where they are, while upholding our own values.

We will:

  • Use X in a measured and purposeful way.
  • Monitor developments on the platform closely.
  • Keep our usage under regular review at trustee level.
  • Act swiftly if further abuses, harmful practices or risks emerge that are inconsistent with our values or charitable objectives.

Should the platform’s environment deteriorate to a point where continued use is no longer appropriate, we will reconsider our presence and take action accordingly.

Our priority remains clear: to communicate responsibly, protect our reputation and advance our charitable mission in the public interest.

Signed, Trustees.
