Exmoor pony ‘Brian’ fulfils farmer’s 80th birthday dream with horse-drawn surprise
When ‘Farmer John’ Batchelor arrived at his surprise 80th birthday party in a traditional pony and trap, the cheers from waiting guests moved him to tears. The special moment was made possible by Brian, a six-year-old Exmoor pony from West Chiltington in West Sussex, and his owners David and Jackie Stride.
The journey began when the Strides received a last-minute plea on Facebook from party organiser Michelle Crouch on the eve of Farmer John’s party. They had been let down by their original transport arrangements. By the following morning, Brian was harnessed and ready 20 miles away in Wineham, near Hickstead and waiting as the first surprise for John.
“The look on his face when John saw Brian stood there harnessed up – he didn’t even acknowledge any of us, he went straight to the pony, bless him,” said Jackie Stride. “Brian trotted around the roads from our meeting point and when we pulled into the barn where the surprise party was, there were loads of people there and they all cheered. John burst into tears, it was lovely.”
The birthday treat was especially sweet for John, who has been battling cancer. A retired farmer from Southwater, he has no family of his own but an extended family and friends that he has supported over many years, who share his love of rural life.
Brian (registered name Withypoole Cricky’s Footman) represents a remarkable transformation story. Purchased three years ago from breeder Rex Milton of Herd 23 and unbroken, he now serves as an Exmoor pony ambassador.
“It’s hard to believe how he’s turned out when he was untouched when we bought him,” Jackie added. “Getting a wild pony into a horsebox was a challenge in itself. But now look at him.
“So many people approached us at the party wanting to know more about the breed. We have a small campsite here and many visitors have never seen an Exmoor pony before.”
The Strides declined payment for the birthday surprise, instead asking the grateful friends to donate to the Exmoor Pony Society – for which we thank you!

Brian not only drives but also competes in showing classes, having performed well at the New Forest Show and Kent County Show last year. He was also voted Exmoor Star in 2024 by Exmoor Pony Society members.
David Stride, a retired farrier who drove competitively for many years, now focuses on giving back to the equestrian community through his volunteer work with Driving for the Disabled. “After 50 years as a farrier, it’s a way of giving something back,” he said. “It’s wonderful to have Brian with me, and we will continue to play a role in supporting these worthwhile activities.”
